Videos: What Shanghai looked like on Chinese New Years
So those of us who’ve lived through Spring Festival week in China knew what to expect: tons and tons of fireworks, set off from both homes and commercial establishments, into the wee hours of the morning and – usually – the rest of the week. In fact, last night, being the night to welcome in the Fortune Goddess, was quite a doozy.
While Beijing might be getting the most attention from media right now, the real show was in Shanghai. Apparently, we beat them in fireworks usage by about 200 tons. That’s right, the capital city of China only managed to throw up 800 tons of explosions into the air compared to our 1000. Lame!
Anyway, those of us living here may be a little shell shocked, but for audiences that want a taste of what went on February 14th in this city: a compilation of Shanghai fireworks vids below.
Shanghaiist reader brightcandle witnessed the Old City lit up by oodles and oodles of firework happy Shanghainese families.
Shanghaiist Founding Editor Dan Washburn grumbled as his normally quiet residential area became a storm of flashing lights and thundering noises.
Flickr user DKwan was on the Huangpu, getting a spectacular view of riverside fireworks on New Years Eve.
